These two islands off the east coast of Madagascar are protected from the vast Indian Ocean beyond by a reef. This creates a calm lagoon on the east coast of the islands and protected, perfect swimming beaches to the western side.

Welcome to Ile aux Nattes, a hidden gem situated just off the southern tip of Ile Sainte Marie in Madagascar. This small and breathtaking island, approximately 4 km in diameter, offers a unique and enchanting experience for travelers seeking an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
To reach Ile aux Nattes, adventurous souls must embark on a journey via pirogue, a traditional dugout canoe, as no cars have found their way onto this tranquil paradise. Instead, sandy beach paths await, inviting visitors to wander and explore at a leisurely pace. The absence of motorized traffic enhances the island's serenity and allows guests to fully immerse themselves in its natural beauty.
Despite its small size, the community of Ile aux Nattes boasts a population of around 1500, and its own president presides over this close-knit island society. As you stroll around this idyllic haven, a leisurely walk spanning approximately 3 hours, you'll encounter numerous beach bars and restaurants, tempting you to pause, savor the local flavors, and indulge in the island's captivating atmosphere.

But Ile aux Nattes is not the only treasure awaiting adventurous souls in this region.

Just a stone's throw away, the larger Ile Sainte Marie holds many fascinating surprises, beckoning you to explore its wonders. Whether on foot, by kayak, bicycle, or navigating the charming Tuk Tuks, the possibilities for discovery are endless.

One of the highlights of Sainte Marie is the world's only known pirate cemetery, an intriguing testament to the island's captivating history. For over a century, the rocky secluded bays of Sainte Marie served as a haven for notorious pirates, drawing individuals from all corners of the pirate world.

Immerse yourself in the tales of the past and pay homage to those who once walked these shores.
Moreover, Sainte Marie proudly boasts the oldest Catholic Church in Madagascar, an architectural gem that stands as a testament to the island's rich cultural heritage. Stepping into this historic place of worship, you can feel the weight of history mingling with the spirituality that permeates the air.
